Toothpain / Cavity / Broken tooth

Tooth pain usually occurs when the nerve in the root of a tooth or surrounding a tooth is irritated. Severity of tooth pain need not reflect severity of the problem.

Common causes of a toothpain are:

• Tooth cavity
• Gum disease
• Sensitive teeth
• Bruxism
• A fractured tooth due to trauma
• A tooth abscess
• An impacted tooth

Signs and symptoms associated with tooth pain:

• Pain on biting or chewing
• Headaches
• Sensitivity due to heat or cold.
• Sensitivity due to sweet or acidic foods
• Bleeding gums
• Pus discharge from around a tooth or gums
• Intraoral or extraoral swelling
• Swollen glands
• Bad breath
• Bad taste in your mouth
• Fever

Inorder to determine the cause of tooth pain a thorough dental examination will be performed. If required xrays may be taken. Your dental and medical history may be required to diagnose the cause of pain and decide treatment plan accordingly.

Treatment may include

• Medication
• Oral rinses
• Oral devices
• Dental  procedures like restorative fillings, rootcanal therapy, extraction.

Most of the  dental problems can be prevented by flossing, brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and having your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year.
