Periodontitis (pyorrhea) is severe inflammation of your gums if left untreated it can lead to periodontitis and tooth loss.

Signs and symptoms  of periodontal disease:

• Red and swollen gums
• Bleeding gums
• Bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Pus  discharge
• Pain on biting or chewing
• Food lodgement
• Exposed root surfaces

Initial stages of gum disease are reversible and manageable with outmost care and oral hygiene maintainance .However once the disease progresses it is reversible and treatment options become limited.

Early periodontal disease (gingivitis) can be treated with professional cleaning and polishing.Advanced cases may be treated with flap surgeries and use of artifical bone grafts.Soft tissue defects may be treated with gingival graft procedures. Although advanced procedures cannot be cured completely ,they can prevent further deterioration of the tissues and progress of the disease.

Maintenance of oral hygiene and regular dental followup is required to keep the disease under control.
