Fluoride has proven to be an important factor in reducing the prevalance and severity of dental decay.
Mechanism of fluoride to prevent caries
Topical application produce a temporary layer of calcium fluoride like material on the enamel surface. As pH drops in response to acid production, flouride is released and becomes available to remineralize enamel or affect bacterial metabolism.
Professional flouride application therapies are efficacious in reducing prevalence of dental caries. Flouride therapy in the form of a highly concentrated rinse, foam, gel, or varnish is available. It can be applied with a swab, brush, tray, or in form of mouthwash. The treatment usually takes only few minutes. However you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after the treatment so the fluoride can fully absorb. Children at risk for caries should receive a professional fluoride treatment at least every six months.
